Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a natural tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. A crown can also be used to protect a tooth from damage or to improve its appearance.

Crowns are made of different materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these materials. Porcelain or ceramic crowns are most often used to restore front teeth because they provide the best natural color match. Metal crowns are usually used on back teeth because they are stronger and less likely to wear down over time.

Permanent bonding of a crown requires two visits to your dentist. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared and an impression (mold) is made of the tooth. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the crown is custom made. A temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth until your next appointment. At the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is cemented in place with special dental adhesive.

With proper care and good oral hygiene, a dental crown can last for many years. However, it’s important to see your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings to ensure that your crown remains in good condition and does not become loose or come off entirely.
